The Final Grade Calculator supports three input modes so you can work with whichever grading format your course uses. Here is how to use each one.
By Percentage
This is the most common mode. Enter your current course grade as a percentage, the weight of your final exam, and the overall grade you want to achieve. The calculator will tell you exactly what score you need on the final.
Current Grade — your grade before the final exam (e.g. 82%).
Final Exam Weight — the percentage your final counts toward the overall grade (e.g. 30%).
Desired Grade — the overall course grade you want to finish with (e.g. 90%).
Example: Your current grade is 82%, the final is worth 30%, and you want a 90% overall.
Required = (90 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 108.7%
Since 108.7% exceeds 100%, achieving a 90% overall is not possible. You would need to lower your target — for example, aiming for 85% requires: (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 92% on the final.
By Letter Grades
If your syllabus uses letter grades, switch to the Letters mode. Select your current letter grade and your desired letter grade from the dropdown menus, then enter the final exam weight. The calculator converts letters to their numerical equivalents and determines the score you need.
Select your current letter grade (e.g. B+).
Select the letter grade you want to finish with (e.g. A−).
Enter the weight of your final exam.
Example: Your current grade is B+ (87%), the final is worth 25%, and you want an A− (90%).
Required = (90 − 87 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 65.25) ÷ 0.25 = 99% on the final exam.
By Grade Points
For courses graded on a grade-point scale (e.g. 4.0), enter your current grade points, the desired grade points, and the final exam weight. The calculator determines the grade-point value you need to achieve on the final.
Enter your current grade points (e.g. 3.3).
Enter the grade points you want to finish with (e.g. 3.7).
Enter the weight of the final exam as a percentage.
Example: Your current grade is 3.3, the final is worth 40%, and you want a 3.7 overall.
Required = (3.7 − 3.3 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = (3.7 − 1.98) ÷ 0.40 = 4.3 grade points
A 4.3 corresponds to a high A+, which is extremely difficult. A more realistic target of 3.5 would require: (3.5 − 1.98) ÷ 0.40 = 3.8 grade points (A).

What if my final exam has a different weight?
Simply enter the correct weight of your final exam in the Final Exam Weight field. Common weights range from 10% to 50%, but you can enter any value. The calculator adjusts its computation based on whatever weight you specify.
Does this calculator support weighted grading?
