How Semester Grade Is Calculated?

Your semester grade is a weighted average of all your course grades, where the weights are the credit hours assigned to each course. To calculate your semester average, multiply each course grade by its credit hours, sum all the results, and divide by the total number of credit hours taken.

Example: You took two courses this semester:
• Math: 85% (3 credits)
• History: 92% (4 credits)

Semester Grade = [(85 × 3) + (92 × 4)] ÷ (3 + 4) = (255 + 368) ÷ 7 = 623 ÷ 7 = 89%

How do I use the semester grade calculator?

Simply enter the name of each course, the grade you earned, and the credit hours the course is worth. The calculator will automatically multiply your grade by the credits and find your weighted semester average across all classes.

Why do credit hours matter?

Credit hours act as weights. A 4-credit science class with a lab impacts your overall semester grade much more than a 1-credit elective. Higher credit courses have a larger effect on your final semester average.

Can I use letter grades?

Yes, use the toggle at the top of the calculator to switch to the Letters mode. You can select your letter grade for each course, and the calculator will convert it internally to determine your percentage average.

How is this different from a GPA calculator?

A semester grade calculator usually outputs a percentage average for the term (e.g. 89%). A GPA calculator strictly uses the 4.0 scale (e.g. 3.5 GPA) and often accounts for cumulative previous GPA data. You can use the Points mode in this calculator for a GPA-style result.

What if all my classes have the same credits?

If every class is worth the same number of credits (for example, in many high schools), you can leave the credits field blank or enter “1” for all of them. The result will just be a simple, unweighted average of your grades.

Can I add more than 5 classes?

Yes, click the “Add Row” button at the bottom of the calculator to add as many courses as you took this semester. There is no limit to the number of classes you can include.
