Understanding Weighted Grades

Weighted grades give different importance to different categories of work. A common weighting might be: Homework (20%), Quizzes (15%), Midterm (25%), and Final Exam (40%). Your weighted grade = sum of (category grade × category weight). Make sure your total weights add up to 100%.

To calculate a weighted grade, multiply each category’s grade by its percentage weight (as a decimal), and sum the results. For example, if Homework is an 85 (worth 20%) and the Final is a 90 (worth 80%), your grade is (85 × 0.20) + (90 × 0.80) = 17 + 72 = 89%. Our calculator handles the math automatically for you.

Why do my weights need to add up to 100%?

In a standard weighted grading system, the total weight of all categories combined represents the entire course grade (100%). If your weights do not add up to 100%, the calculated grade will not reflect a complete course total. Always check your syllabus for the exact category weights.
